This work by David Cay Johnston is simply phenomenal. A meticulously well-researched, explosive piece of work, Free Lunch exposes exactly what it says, how the wealthiest Americans enrich themselves at government expense and stick us with the bill. Among the maddening stories Johnston offers, is the cold hard fact that while the vast majority of us have seen our incomes decline since the 1970s (yes we are making less now than we did 30 years ago, how’s that for progress) what he deems the “superich,” the 30,000 wealthiest Americans, have seen their incomes grow at an astronomical 650% in that same time frame. This is all possible through corporate subsidies that virtually hand the tax dollars from average Americans over to billionaires, lax safety standards in railroad industries and others that saves companies billions while threatening our lives and safety, and scores of tax breaks for the super rich.
Some of the stories are outlined here on our blog, as well as in this final preview, along with info on some folks who want to see this type of behavior end. Bottom line, this book is a must-read, and something to add in the arsenal for anyone who wants to be more informed and more inspired to do something to change our society.
